Oil Seals & 'O' Rings Oil SealsThere are thousands of different sizes and styles of rotary shaft seals ranging from 6mm to 1500mm. The standard styles are single lipped metal case or rubber covered, semi-dual (one sprung one unsprung lip) metal case or rubber covered, or double sprung seals again metal or rubber covered. The normal materials used are carbon steel shells and Nitrile sealing elements but it is also possible to have stainless steel shells and garter springs with sealing elements of Viton, Silicone, Epdm, Leather, Felt and Ptfe. O RingsO Rings are the simplest of seals and are extensively used in varied situations. Elastomers include Nitrile, Viton, Silicone, Hnbr, and Explosive decompression material, Ptfe, Epdm and Polyurethane. Shore hardness can be between 40IRHD to 95 IRHD and in some instances coloured rings can be manufactured. Sophisticated elastomers have been developed to enable sealing in corrosive chemical environments and high temperature applications. For extremely large rings it is possible to substitute cord with a vulcanised joint. When designing it is essential groove dimensions are standard for the cross section to ensure the o ring will perform correctly. Standard o ring selection boxes exist for particular industries, such as plumbing, and also cover the more commonly used metric and imperial sizes. Bonded seals can also be supplied as BSP or metric popular sizes held within a selection box.
